PTSD

Introduction:

PTSD also known as post traumatic stress disorder is a mental disorder that can be triggered by catastrophic events.

For example, patients with a military service background, car accident, domestic violence and child abuse might suffer from PTSD.

Symptoms:

  • Intrusive memories / flashbacks
  • Hyperarousal, or being easily startled
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia or other sleep problems
  • Emotional numbing
  • Avoidence of trauma related stimulations

There are some similiraties with other mental health disorders. Anxiety is the most common. For PTSD patient it shows in three clusters.

Clusters:

  • Reexperiencing
  • Marked avoidence
  • Hyperarousal

Triggers of PTSD:

  • Stressful event
  • Situation that is exceptionally threatening
  • Catastrophic events

PTSD therapies:

  • Cognitive Behavioral therapy
  • Stress Inculation Training
  • Pharmacotherapies
