Is acupuncture on the head safe?

by Lilly Hillairet Clinic Assistant

Introduction:

Acupuncture is safe when it is performed on the head. We use it to treat headaches and other conditions. Studies show acupuncture being a safer alternative rather than modern medicine.  Not only does acupuncture treat headaches and migraines, it also treats anxiety and depression.

Advantages:

  •  Improvement in blood flow throughout the body
  •  Release of the brain's natural pain killers (endorphins)
  • Can help anxiety
  • Can sooth the brain's response to stress

This alternative aims to assist people who seek balance in their daily lives and want to stay away from medication.

Different categories of headaches:

  • Migraine headaches
  • Tension headaches
  • Cluster headaches
  • Post traumatic headaches

There are many forms of headaches and some can be caused by mental trauma and some others by physical trauma and/or metabolic issues.

Conclusion:

Some medications can have serious side effects which could result in a rebound headache. One of the greatest advantages with acupuncture is, unlike synthetic drugs, it has virtually no side effects. Acupuncture is safe and overall painless for treating headaches. Herbal medicine might be added to the therapy and discussed with the patient if it is necessary.
